If there is a problem with having much of the best walleye fishing in the world at your doorstep, it is that so many other fantastic fishing opportunities often fly beneath the radar.
That is what buddy, Grant McAllister was bemoaning the other day.
Grant runs G2 Angling service, which is renown for catching mammoth 12-, 13-, even 14-pound plus walleyes in southern Ontario’s famous Bay of Quinte. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t want to bet that he doesn’t put more anglers onto 10-pound plus walleyes every year that any other guide service in North America. Check out his website if you want to feast your eyes on some of the veritable monsters www.g2angling.com
So why the heck was he complaining?
“As much as we love fishing for walleyes,” Grant chuckled, “too many anglers think they’re the only species that count. But we’re catching football-size largemouth bass right now, like they’re going out of style, in the Kawartha Lakes.
“Just the other day, my buddy Mike Gilles and I pulled up to our first spot, less than 150 yards from the boat ramp and instantly got into the bucketmouths. Mike was throwing a topwater frog while I was armed with one of the new Berkley Havoc Wideloads. I’ve caught so many big largemouth on this new bait that it has quickly become my “go to” lure for them.
“Anyway, right in front of us was a beautiful bed of lily pads. I made a long cast into the heart of the pads and immediately was into a beautiful 3 1/2-pound largemouth. It was simply the beginning to another great day of action. Casting heavy cover and lily pads produced more than 40 largemouth, ranging from to two to four pounds. And we also triggered five muskies! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to land any of the toothy critters.”
