Ten Best Smallmouth Cranks Of All Time

Many ingredients need to be stirred into the pot to determine which crankbait tops all others for smallmouth bass. Some factors actually make it impossible to pick one clear favorite as the all-time best for all situations. Some work better in clear water, some in cloudy water. Some work best after fronts, some excel in stable weather. Some only dive 6 feet, so what if they’re down 10? And so on. And, to some extent, it’s personal. So, since it’s actually impossible to say which of the following is truly best of all all the time, we list the top 10 producers for me, personally. And, since the best crankbait bites tend to take place in stable weather when smallies are really aggressive, the most aggressive baits tend to gravitate toward the top of the list. But, one thing’s for certain: Any list of the top 10 should include a bait or two that matches any conditions, and any situation.

I've had excellent luck with lipless rattlers, primarily Cordell Super Spots and XPS shad colors. I'm really surprised no Rat-L-Traps here either.

With the old school lures I would add the Cordell Big O in crayfish and hot tiger finishes. As far as new cranks I would have to go the the Lucky Craft Rick Clunn 0.5 silent square bill in brown or watermelon craw and the LC Pointer Minnow 78.

Everyone is a critic, but for my list there would have to be the Bomber 4A. Absolutely fantastic on Ozark Smallmouths in both river and lakes.

norman little N, norman dd20 both in splatter bass and my all time favorite; Lucky Craft's CBD 20 in ghost minnow color!!!. we are talking crankbaits here not jerkbaits. the pointer is a jerkbait.

how can the rebel wee craw not be on this list?!?!?!

  • X-Man

All great lures. My personal list would have to include the Rebel Wee-Craw. My goodness, the numbers of river and stream smallies I've caught on that lure.

Most of these are similar in shape, fat "O" type baits. I have better luck with minnow shaped baits. Agree that something in the Rebel crayfish family deserves mention.

No Shad Rap? Really? In an alewife based smallmouth lake, you give me a plain old, silver foil #7 Shad Rap in April and it might still be tied on at the end of June.

    no c.c. shad?

Does anyone know what color norman middle n that is?
