Largemouth Bass!

Family day of fishing, trolling rapala’s over an under water point. My wife got a spectacular hit, which she could not even reel in, so she gave the pole to my son. He gets the fish right up to the boat, insanely huge largemouth. I know what they say about a fish that does not get landed but this one was seriously 9lb or better.Coaching my son, so he don’t lose it. Giving pointers. Gets it close to the boat, i grab the net and tell him to slowly walk to the nose of the boat, keeping that rod tip up and pressure on fish. Wasn;t worried about line snapping since I knew the reels were set properly, just got to keep slack out of the line. All of which i explained ot my son.Reach over to get fish in the net and my son, being a curious young lad, reached over too, to watch. Of course this gave the fish just the proper amount of slack line to snap it right off and away he went.

Everyone was crestfallen but none so much as son. Really thought he was going to cry. Told him not to worry, I had another lure just like that one and we would troll some more. GPS showed our path and explained we would literally go over the exact line.

Rig up and away we go. This time though, the lure is on his pole.he is on a mission and I am just praying he gets something to hit it.

Not 10 minutes goes by when this fish hammered that old lure. What made it so neat was this one tail danced along the water about three times. Put up a better fight than the much larger bass my son had lost earlier.

Of course, we tried to tell my son that his fish was much bigger but he was not having any of it. He tells us its okay, he knew he lost a bigger fish but he was super happy with this one!

When I asked him if he wanted to keep it or release it, he said release. He wanted some other kid to have as much fun as he just had.

Great fish story. Thanks for sharing. I find it amusing that the biggest bass my family every landed was a 9+ at L. Marion, S.C.. We were also trolling a crank, trying for a striper, when the big bass hit. It came up and shook its large-mouth head at us. My wife handed me the rod, saying it was a “too big” for her. At about 29 inches long it remains the longest bass of my lifetime. On the drive back to Wash. D. C. that night we saw a mounted 14#er that wasn’t any longer than our skinny 9+. Whatever, it was a memorable “bucketmouth! Thanks again for triggering this memory.
