Finesse News Network Gear Guide: Fizards

by Ned Kehde   |  April 11th, 2013 0

On Feb. 25, when we wrote a blog  about scents, we were unaware of a new product called Fizards, which was unveiled in January.

Decades ago, after Guido Hibdon of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, and the late Bobby Garland popularized tube fishing, it became fashionable to insert a piece of Alka-Seltzer inside a tube and delicately place this fizzing concoction on the bed of a spawning bass. It was said that the bubbles created by the Alka-Seltzer provoked a wary largemouth bass to attack the tube.

Nowadays the folks at Fizards have developed  a pliable material that can be inserted into a tube; wrapped around line above a lure or around a the head of jig; affixed to the rear hook of a crankbait; wrapped around the shank of a hook that sports a Texas rigged plastic worm or creature bait; attached to the shank of an exposed jig hook that is adorned with a soft-plastic bait such as Z-Man Fishing Products’ 2 1/2-inch ZinkerZ; and attached to the shank of a skirted-jig-and-trailer combo.

This Z-Man Fishing Products' 2 1/2-inch ZinkerZ and a 1/16-ounce Gopher Tackle Mushroom Head Jig has some Fizards wrapped around the line and around the shank of the hook

According to the anglers at Fizards, they used it to allure black bass, panfish, walleye and a variety of saltwater denizens. Not only does this kneadable material produce bubbles, as the Alka-Seltzer did in the good old days, but it leaves scent trail, and it is the scent of a gizzard shad.  It is also biodegradable.

It is available in  four hues: pearl, watermelon, black and bubblegum. A one-ounce package retails for $10.
