Do you accept freelance articles? If so, who do I submit them to?

Yes, In-Fisherman occasionally accepts freelance submissions. First, send a query about what you'd like to write about to Doug Stange, Editor In Chief. It can contain one or several ideas. This gives Doug the chance to offer suggestions or recommendations. Or, if you have already written the articles, send a listing so he can choose something appropriate for our editorial schedule. Our lead-time is three months but some columns are already planned a year in advance.

You can submit your queries, etc. by mail or e-mail. When submitting articles by mail, include a printed hard copy and the file on disk, saved as a Microsoft Word file or as a text file (ASCII). This allows us to correctly read the file regardless of what computer platform you have. When submitting by e-mail, attach the file to your message.

Send e-mail queries and submissions to Doug Stange:

Can I submit my latest invention for your consideration?

Yes, we'd be interested in obtaining samples for our editorial staff but only if you've perfected and marketed your product. We can't promise anything, but it's possible that your product might be field tested and mentioned in our publication(s). This is typically a long process so don't despair if you don't hear from us for many months after we receive your samples. You're always welcome to contact us to see if they are being considered for an editorial mention. Please send an email to Doug Stange at Doug.Stange@intermediaoutdoors.com to let us know you want to send us samples or literature about your product.

If you're wondering about getting our opinion on a new product that you've invented but haven't actually put on the market yet or just want to see if we think your idea is a winner, we don't do that anymore. We do, however, have a great article that might help you decide whether it's worth jumping through all the hoops to get your invention on the market: Inventor Beware.

Is it possible to sell my old issues of In-Fisherman magazine?

Most of the queries we receive regarding old issues are from people who have collections and are interested in selling or giving them away. Only occasionally do we get correspondences from people looking to buy collections. Since we don't handle collections and already sell back issues at $8 each, we're not familiar with the prices old issues can command. We've heard that some of the earlier issues are selling well on the auction site Ebay so you may want to check that out. If you don't end up selling your collection, but still want to part with those issues, an alternative is to donate them to your local library, youth organizations, or fishing clubs.

What is the formula for determining the weight of a fish based on its size?

The rule of thumb for fish weights of various body types are:

Pike (length X length X length) divided by 3500

Walleye (length X length X length) divided by 2700

Bass (length X length X length) divided by 1600

Bluegill (length X length X length) divided by 1200

Another generalized formula is:

(girth X girth X length) divided by 800

All of these will result in reasonable approximations.
