Rods and Reels
Smooth Drags Tame Tough Fish
A dependable, smooth-operating drag is a key factor when fighting and landing big fish, especially with light line. Pflueger's new Solara spinning reel is not only cosmetically good looking on the outside, the reel's innards also have many attractive features. The front drag system features both stainless steel and oiled felt washers, which can be adjusted in small increments to precisely match the fish you're fighting, eliminating the need to back reel.

Tapered Spools Mean Longer Casts
Long casts allows you to keep your bait in the strike zone longer, adding many minutes of productive fishing time during the course of a day. A longer, fast-action rod combined with a slightly oversized spinning reel that features long-cast spool design is about right for making long, efficient casts. Pflueger's new Double Taper Spool, which features a titanium lip, allows the line to easily spill off the spool for smooth casting performance and increased casting distance. In a general poll at In-Fisherman headquarters, In-Fisherman staffers have gained an extra 10 to 15 feet of distance in most fishing situations.

Durable Spincasting Reels
Spincasting reels remain one of the best learning tools for novice anglers. The push-button operation is easy to master, building skills that can be applied to spinning and baitcasting outfits. But many anglers, especially those who primarily target panfish and smaller catfish, never outgrow spincasting gear.
The knock against spincasting reels in the past has been their poor durability. Most reels function well enough out of the box, but after a season or two of use, the gears begin to grind, the line begins to twist, and every fourth cast results in a tangle that can be fixed only by disassembling the reel.
The new Synergy Alloy spincasting reels from Shakespeare are different. These reels feature rigid frames, smoother drags, and a host of other improved features that you're not likely to find on any other spincasting reel in this price range. The ball-bearing drive, instant anti-reverse, and oscillating spool even impress most baitcasting fans.
These spincasting reels are suitable for any light- to medium-duty freshwater application and probably would work for light saltwater duty, too. Either model in this series is ideal for novice anglers just learning how to cast, or the die-hard spincasting aficionado looking to upgrade to a more durable and smooth-performing reel.
