Hook ‘n Look: Where Largemouth Bass are Most Secure

Hook ‘n Look: Where Largemouth Bass are Most Secure

We all know that largemouth bass are cover-related creatures. The shade and protection offered by a single pier, or a row of docks, the overhead canopy of a grass mat, some brush or laydown tree can give the predator a place to live and feed from.

Cover oriented bass can be some of the most aggressive fish and therefore, some of the easiest to catch. But as anglers we often don’t give ourselves a chance at the strike because of our own behavior. While they may be comfortable, our lack of boat control, cast control or even our own laziness can keep us from getting more bites.

In this edition of Perspectives with Hook ‘n Look, Kim Stricker and The Outdoor Channel Mitch Petrie spend some time in the underwater world of the largemouth bass around some docks to see what the find. The result is that the find not only a plethora of game fish along with the bass, but they find that anglers may not be working hard enough to make the tough presentation deep under the piers.

They also discover the comfort level of the fish with movement and encroachment into their sanctuary that would show us how our boat placement and cast control can influence the bass and have an effect on our effectiveness as anglers. By taking a look at the footage captured in this segment, we can begin to better understand how a bass will position itself around cover, and how we can begin to better understand how that knowledge can better us as anglers.
