After a very slow morning on the New River in WVA, I switched baits around noon and started fishing a Gulp Hellgrammite on a 1/8oz black jig head behind a small island with excellent pull water and nice rock structure on one side. Landed 18 Smallmouth in about 1 hour including this 21-3/4" fish entry. Another fish was 20-1/2" and several in the 16" - 18" class. The only reason I left this area was I hooked about a 10lb catfish which I had to float down river to land. Considering quality and quantity, it was the best New River bite I ever had and one of those rare cases where you feel like you have the perfect bait in the perfect location.
