A proposal put forward by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources would reduce the statewide walleye limit from six to four beginning in March 2027.
The DNR cited “climactic conditions, invasive species introductions and a sharp increase in fish-finding technology use” among other factors as part of its proposal, which would alter the daily limit for the first time since the current rules were enacted in 1956. If enacted, the change would go into effect on March 1, 2027.
According to the DNR, more than 4,000 interviews were conducted with anglers between 2021-23 and 67 percent supported the effort to reduce the daily limit while 18 percent opposed it. Other surveys conducted by the DNR also saw significant approval for the move.
The rule allowing anglers to possess only one walleye over 20 inches in length will remain in place.
