Due to windy conditions I found a back bay on the lee side of an island to do some topwater frogging for largemouth. The fish were hitting way back in the mixed grass and lilypads but were short striking. I saw this fish strike at my frog in an opening between some grass and lilypads but it missed and wouldn't come back at it again. I threw the frog back into the opening and left it there just barely twitching my rod to get the head of the frog bobbing up and down. I lost sight of the frog as it drifted behind a few stalks of grass and it didn't re-appear. I lifted my rod to see if the bait had hung up on something and noticed my frog was gone and my line was angled toward the bottom. The fish must have just slurped it under - no splash or sound of any kind! After setting the hook I knew it was a big fish as it really didn't move far on the set despite using 40 lb braided line and a flipping rod. The fish came in with another 2 lbs of weeds as it tried to drive head down in the weeds the whole way to the boat. A quick measurement showed me that I had a match for the 20 1/2 inch smallmouth I caught 3 days ago! Sweet!
