The holes were punched, lines set at depth and the smelt were waiting on the gators. This was Leslies second trip out ice fishing. The first was in a snow storm, when work let out early. From that moment it seemed he was hooked, so much that he went out and bought 150.00 in ice gear the next day. About a month passed and the opportunity found us both with the same weekend off. We would drive to the big water and have a go at the fish or drown a few minnows. Nothing was going on with the bobbers and I mentioned that maybe what it was going to take was one of his new rods (tags still on) in the water to get a fish. After getting his rod set up he proceeded to set the depth in what he felt was a good hole. While I walked back to the shelter I noticed a bobber down. "Hey Les" I called out. "How about coming over here and get this fish?" "Ya, ya" he replied. I had introduced him to the practical jokes on ice already and wasn't readly fooled. Upon coming over and to his shock he found this beauty of a saug-eye. His first keeper on ice!
