My partner and I were having a tough time fishing a two day tournament in Eastern New Mexico during the brunt of a brutal cold front. The fish were being difficult and the weather conditions made casting and retrieving tricky. Two hours before weigh-in we went to an area we knew held big largemouth. On the first cast I hooked up with a 12 inch smallmouth. Needless to say, it was not the fish we were after. We circled around the area and on the third pass the monster hammered my white spinnerbait. She came out of the water three or four times and my heart stopped each time she attempted to spit the lure. My partner did a great job netting the fish and when we finally got a look a good look we realized it was a smallmouth. In our area, this is a fish of a lifetime!!! It made a great ending to an incredibly tough tournament.
