A cold front came through. So i decided to keep my fishing simple. I grabbed one rod and a handful of small plastics. The lake I fished has been heavily pressured and poached. The lake is close to home and convenient for short casting trips. Large bass are not common. The cats and crappies that are left are few and a rare and welcome site when they show their scaly faces. Despite a 20 degree drop in temp and gusty wind I was on the bass and having a blast. One cast, my drag went and I felt some weight. The fish did not feel like the others. Next I saw a bright flash and i knew I had crappie. It then rolled and I got very anxious once I realized how big it was. I was using and ultra light with 4lb line, a 1/8 oz jig-head, and a Producto black Spring Grub. My whole body relaxed when I finally lipped this huge pre-spawn black crappie! It was a fantastic crappie surprise!
