Fishing Gear: Fire in a Flash

Fishing Gear: Fire in a Flash

Description and application: A lot of us are traditional, or you might even say stubborn, when it comes to starting camp and cooking fires the true “outdoorsman” way. Collect dry tinder, split some kindling, layer on some dry fuel wood. Sometimes, however, dry fire materials are in short supply when you need it, or time is of the essence to produce a roaring flame and hot coals for warmth or cooking shorelunch. If you find yourself in the latter situation, Pull Start Fire is an answer. The one-time use fire-starting device requires no kindling, lights wet wood, and is windproof and rainproof. It burns over 30 minutes and packs a punch for the small 5- x 2- x 1-inch, 4-ounce fire starter.

Staff Perspective: The first time I tried this device I used damp split oak with no tinder or kindling. Tied the Pull Start Fire off to one of the logs as instructed and pulled the cord. After several seconds of “safety smoke” indicator, the brick of sanding dust and light wax fully ignited and a burned long and hot, starting a successful campfire. I like starting fires the conventional way, but when you need a fire in a pinch under not-so ideal fire-starting conditions, a Pull Start Fire can get the job done.

Cost: $19.99 for a 3-pack.
