ICAST 2020: New Spinning Reels

All spinning reels are not created equal. They may look similar on the exterior, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts the most. The latest wave of spinning reels aimed at the freshwater market consists of highly-engineered powerhouses meant to deliver a feeling of strength and rigidity without sacrificing the sensitivity that is so critical no matter what species you’re trying to connect with.

Here’s a look at some of the new spinning reels coming your way later this year.

Lew’s | Mach Crush spinning reel

The popular combo component is now available on its own. Packed with an 11-bearing system with stainless steel double shielded ball bearings and a Zero Reverse one-way clutch bearing, the reel features an aluminum frame and carbon skeletal rotor to reduce weight. The burnt orange color is an eye-catcher and the Winn Dri-Tac knob adds a comfort-plus element to the fit and finish. Available in 200, 300 and 400 models.

Lew’s | KVD spinning reel

Ten bearings are at the core of one of KVD’s new weapons. So is an aluminum frame and a carbon skeletal rotor paired with a DuraMax drag system for consistent fish-fighting capabilities. Available in 200, 300 and 400 models.

Duckett Fishing | Paradigm SWX spinning reel

The foundation is a one-piece forged aluminum frame and paired with a carbon fiber rotor and 10 precision Japanese ball bearings. Also features a sealed carbon drag system and a 6.0:1 high speed gear ratio. Available in 2500 and 3000 models.

Shimano | Vanford spinning reel

More than a decade of engineering advancement has materialized in the Vanford series, so it's easy to see why the 2500 model was voted Best New Freshwater Reel in the New Product Showcase. The Vanford reels utilize a CI4+ body for reduced weight and carbon rigidity. A new Magnum Lite Rotor decreases the rotational inertia by nearly half. The HAGANE Gear, a pillar of Shimano reels, works in lockstep with Silent Drive and MicroModule Gear II to produce a smooth retrieve and performance when it matters. Available in 500, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000 and 5000 models.

Abu Garcia | Zenon spinning reel

A magnesium body is at the core of Abu Garcia’s lightest spinning reel, which comes in at just under 5 ounces. The reel body is contoured for a comfortable fit in the hands. Optimized for light-line finesse presentations, the Zenon is equipped with low-inertia, silent-rotation rotors and an ultralight Air Fin Spool. Available in 20 and 30 size models.

Okuma | ITX Carbon spinning reel

The body, side plate and rotor are constructed with rigid C-40X long strand carbon fiber, which is 25 percent stronger than standard graphite reels. Eight HPB ball bearings keeps things running smoothly while a machined aluminum 2-tone anodized spool is surrounded by Okuma’s cyclonic flow rotor system that sweeps water away from the center of the reel. The multi-disc, carbon fiber drag system is equipped with a hydro-block gasket to keep the drag dry and running smooth. Available in 1000, 2500, 3000 and 4000 models.
