Pike, late trout, walleyes, and grayling abound at this remote Far North fish camp, owned by Derrick and Desi Uniat. This day Derrick and I travel over trail by Argo to an outpost lake teaming with lake trout. Vertically jigging spoons and paddletail swimbaits on jigheads, we catch dozens of lake trout from 5 to 8 pounds in short order, with trout to 25 pounds or more a possibility in this lake, one of several accessible to the camp guests. As a bonus, Derrick lands a dozen or more burbot.
Heading across Lloyd Lake , the main camp lake, we catch a half dozen walleyes to go along with a few of the lake trout we caught, for shorelunch with the rest of our group. Before lunch we pick fresh blueberries, which will find their way into that evening's dessert. Then Chef Derrick prepares delicious panko-breaded and panfried fish with other delicious sides.
On Lloyd Lake, the walleye fishing is fantastic on various structural elements and inflowing river systems. A short hike brings you to impressive waterfalls where you can catch walleyes and pike feeding in the tailout. Big pike are found in the main lake and river mouths, where casting with spoons, jig-swimbait combos, and spinnerbaits prove effective near deep weededges and rocky points. Lloyd Lake also gives up its share of big lakers. Another day we travel via Ranger to another outpost lake, where we connect with big pike.
Dining at Lloyd Lake Lodge is a culinary experience. Chef Derrick, former contestant on Chopped Canada and culinary arts teacher, prepares delicious multi-course dinners each evening, in addition to delicious breakfasts and lunches each day. At evening meals we savor soups, appetizers, main-course entrees, and mouth-watering desserts prepared in the camp's impressive kitchen, as we all gather to share stories from our day on the water. For those interested in learning more about cooking and cuisine, Lloyd Lake Lodge offers an optional culinary vacation with fishing and cooking classes.
