Wading for smallmouth in December in Minnesota? Ya gotta be nuts! But there I was, 30 feet out on a rock bar, thigh deep in the Mississippi, a light snow falling, reminding myself to keep my balance every time I set the hook,The presentation couldn't have been easier. Medium weight spinning tackle with a 4-5" sucker suspended below a slip bobber. With short casts into the heavier current, I left the bail open, kept the rod tip high and let the rig drift parallel to the shore. On this particular day, the drift seldom lasted 75 feet. I released 16 smallmouth in just under two hours, the smallest at 14 inches.Nothing gets cold when the fishing is hot...well, almost nothing.
