The manifold virtues of the small hair jig, according to Brian Waldman: an update

Several readers have inquired about the best way to attach the soft-plastic chunk to a small hair jig, and Waldman says:

"Attachment of the small trailer is just like a traditional pork frog.  That is the hook point is inserted through the thicker pad of the trailer and not threaded on. I try and center the hook point insertion site relative to

the overall pad as much as possible to prevent any ill running effects. I prefer to use the trailers with the thicker pad portion to the underside of the bait, leaving a smooth top surface from front to back, though the bass may not actually care€¦ ."

Waldman also provided an informative fishing report about his November 17th outing with a small hair jig:

"On the fishing front, I got a rare weekday trip in yesterday. I fished from 2:20 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. and lassoed 53  largemouth to the boat, all on the small hair jig. That brings my total to over 1700 for the year.

Conditions were less than stellar with bluebird skies following the front. But I was fortunate to catch a WNW wind which was a positive for my local reservoir.

Another observation from yesterday - about two-thirds of the

bass were caught on a trailerless jig, so anglers need to test the jig both with and without  the trailer to see if the bass show a preference."
