Garmin has announced the introduction of the GSD 28, which is a high-powered sonar module that features RapidReturn sonar with next-gen xCHIRP technology. Promising unparalleled clarity and detail for anglers navigating extreme depths, the GSD 28 aims to redefine the way anglers explore the underwater world.
According to Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales, "Garmin's digital sonar modules have been trusted for offshore, high-powered sonar by anglers for nearly two decades, and the GSD 28 adds new and innovative features to set the standard once again for saltwater sportfishing. Our RapidReturn and xCHIRP technologies combine to provide deep-sea anglers crisper, clearer, and more sonar returns in deeper waters, which can be the difference between finding and missing your targets."
At the heart of the GSD 28 is the RapidReturn sonar, a technology that sends multiple sonar signals through the water column simultaneously. This increased transmit rate, up to six times faster than its predecessor, provides anglers with real-time, high-quality sonar data on the multi-function display. The result is a crisper and more detailed view of what's happening beneath the boat.
The xCHIRP technology incorporated into the GSD 28 offers higher resolution and superb target separation. It allows anglers to distinguish between bottom features, bait, and sport fish.

The GSD 28 also supports dual-channel (1-3 kW) CHIRP, covering a broad frequency range between 25-250 kHz. This wide range allows for a more detailed picture of what's beneath the boat, including fish on the ocean bottom and objects in the water column.
Designed with the rugged demands of sportfishing in mind, the GSD 28 is built to withstand harsh marine environments. It is resistant to high winds, rain, and sunlight, with an IPX7 rating, ensuring its performance in challenging conditions. Even in rough waters, the RapidReturn sonar can be paired with the optional MSC 10 external satellite compass (sold separately) to mitigate the effects of wave and swell conditions.
The GSD 28 is compatible with a wide range of Garmin and Airmar transducers. These transducers can be easily configured, either manually or automatically, giving users extraordinary flexibility when setting up their sonar screens. The GSD 28 is compatible with various Garmin chartplotters, including the GPSMap 9000 series, GPSMap 8600/8600xsv, GPSMap 7x3/9x3/12x3, and GPSMap 10x2/12x2 series.
