My buddy Lee, my girlfriend liz and i decided that we were going to hit up one of our best wiper spots on this beautiful sunday afternoon. We had heard there were no fish being caught but we decided to try it anyway. The conditions were perfect! low water flow due to heavy irrigation had the canal at tobeys check down about 2 foot and gizzard shad were everywhere. I cast right along the cement wall where the shad were schooling and about 30 seconds later my rod about jumped out of my hands. The fish took off like a rocket in the swifter water, and all i could do is let him run. after a couple of minutes i started to gain some line back when he took me into some rebar. I thought it was all over then, but suddenly he got out of it and started headed my way. After a few more short runs he was mine! We quickly measured him snapped some pictures and sent him on his way! A great release! The fish had stripped the gears out of my phluger presidential reel but with that much excitement i didnt care. I cast out one more time and wham another giant, only this time my drag failed and my line broke! We fished the rest of the day with no more bites.
