2D sonar is far from obsolete even in a world of forward-facing, side-scanning, down imaging, fish-tracking, real-time, and other sonar innovations. It can actually perform better than 3D sonar when you are searching for fish around rocks, scanning for grass beds and hydrilla, and when you’re drop-shotting or using other vertical fishing techniques, according to Stracner.
